Preponderance of Indian Higher Education institutions have been following marks or percentage based evaluation system. It is felt that this traditional method of evaluation impedes the flexibility for the students to study the subjects or courses of their liking and thwarts their mobility to different institutions. This flexibility is necessary as it allows students to select their inter-disciplinary or intra-disciplinary and skill-based courses depending on their interests and aim. This can only be done by embracing Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), an internationally acknowledged system. This system not only offers opportunities and avenues to learn core subjects but also enables a candidate to explore additional avenues of learning beyond the core subjects for holistic development of an individual.
The Basic approach of CBCS:-
It will offer an opportunity for the students to choose courses from a prescribed list of courses and papers offered in different disciplines that is being taught in their respective colleges. In order to bring regularity in evaluation system the UGC has opted to start CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) Grading. This will benefit the students to move across institutions more swiftly within India as well as across countries.
Outline for CBCS:-
- Core Course: This course will be compulsorily studied by a candidate as the main course in their respective discipline choice. They cannot choose other papers in this course.
- Elective Course: The students are given a choices from a pool of courses apart from their core course, which are expected to be more advanced and very specific to the discipline it comes under. This enables exposure to some other domain which contributes in enhancing their proficiency.
- In Elective courses, the students will be expected to supplement studies through a project work or dissertation involving application of knowledge or skill in solving and analysing a problem. This will be done under the supervision of faculty members and would be equivalent to 6 Credits
- Students are also allowed to choose courses from different and unrelated disciplines.
